Full disclaimer

Do solar panels pay for themselves?

The calculator multiplies the energy you use yourself by the electricity price you avoid, adds exported energy at the contracted export price and subtracts annual maintenance. Simple payback is the investment after confirmed grants divided by that saving. You can enter your own annual generation or use the PVGIS example for Sarajevo. The model is not an offer or guarantee and leaves out loans, panel degradation and equipment replacement, so confirm connection and export terms before you invest.

Frequently asked questions

How many years does it take for solar panels to pay back?

It depends on generation, self use and the electricity price. With 6,000 kWh a year, 60% used at home, 0.20 KM per kWh, no export income and 100 KM of maintenance, the saving is 620 KM a year, so a 10,000 KM investment has a simple payback of about 16.13 years. Loans and degradation are not included.

How much electricity do solar panels produce in Sarajevo?

The Sarajevo example in the calculator uses PVGIS 5.3: about 1,201 kWh a year per kWp for south facing panels at a 35° tilt with 14% system losses. A 5 kWp system therefore gives about 6,006 kWh a year. Actual output depends on location, shading and equipment.

METHOD

Formula and method

Saving = self-used energy × price + exports × sale price − maintenance. Payback = investment / saving.
