Full disclaimer

How do you calculate BMI?

BMI is weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared. The calculator shows a category based on CDC adult ranges: under 18.5 is below the reference range, 18.5 to under 25 is the reference range, 25 to under 30 is an elevated BMI, and 30 or more falls into three obesity classes. Body mass index does not measure body fat directly, so muscle mass changes the interpretation. It is meant for adults aged 20 and older who are not pregnant or breastfeeding, and a doctor can give personal advice.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate BMI for an adult?

Divide weight in kilograms by height in metres squared. For example, 180 lb (81.6 kg) and 70 in (177.8 cm) give a BMI of 25.83, an elevated BMI, while 70 kg and 175 cm give 22.86, inside the reference range. This is an informative estimate, so ask a doctor for personal advice.

What is a healthy weight according to BMI?

The calculator does not set an ideal weight, but you can convert the reference BMI range of 18.5 to under 25 for your height. At 70 in (177.8 cm) that is roughly 129 to 174 lb, or 58.5 to 79 kg. BMI cannot tell muscle from fat, so agree any target weight with your doctor.
