The percentage calculator has three modes. For an amount it multiplies A by B and divides by 100, so 20 percent of 150 is 30. For a share it divides A by B and multiplies by 100, so 30 is 20% of 150. For a change from A to B it divides the difference by the absolute value of A, so a rise from 80 to 100 is 25%. It is useful for salaries, prices, discounts and marks.
Frequently asked questions
How do I work out a percentage of a number?
Multiply the number by the percentage and divide by 100. For example, 20% of 150 is 20 × 150 / 100 = 30, and 17% of 250 KM is 42.50 KM. In the calculator choose X percent of a number, enter the percentage as A and the number as B.
How do I calculate a percentage change?
Subtract the old value from the new one, divide the difference by the old value and multiply by 100. If a price rises from 80 to 100 KM, the change is (100 minus 80) / 80 × 100 = 25%. If it falls from 100 to 80 KM, the change is minus 20%.
METHOD
Formula and method
Amount = A × B / 100. Share = A/B × 100. Change = (B−A)/|A| × 100.
